With you wherever you go

A highly portable pancake lens that’s ideal for travel and street photography. When attached to an APS-C camera, the system is made even more compact and easy to carry around while walking. The lens’ simple 6-element, 5 group construction, along with 1 aspherical lens element, achieves high image quality even around the edges. Its advanced optical design ensures great image quality, while a large f/2.8 maximum aperture allows hand-held low-light shooting. STM focusing delivers smooth, near-silent AF when capturing movies.

Overview

Incredibly lightweight, the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM is a fast and versatile lens with advanced AF and superior optics. With a 35mm equivalent focal length of 38mm, it’s appropriate for a variety of purposes. The lens features optimized lens element placement and includes an aspheric element for high image quality from the center of the composition to the corners, and has specialized coatings on the lens elements to reduce ghosting and flare. To ensure excellent color balance, a 7-blade circular aperture provides superb out-of-focus detail. The EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM excels during movie shooting thanks to its STM motor that enables silent and smooth focus tracking (on EOS cameras with Movie Servo AF), plus a micro-stepping drive that keeps aperture changes quiet. The lens also offers full-time manual focus, manual AF adjustment (one-shot AF), and can focus down to a minimum distance of 0.5 ft. (0.16m). Delivering optical brilliance in a lightweight and unobtrusive construction, the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM is a great fixed-optical length lens for photographers looking to add a travel-friendly option to their collection.

Portable ‘pancake’ design

At just 22.8 mm deep, and weighing just 125g, the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM is a highly portable lens that lets you take your EOS anywhere. Its diminutive design makes it discreet too – ideal for street photography.

Natural perspective

The 24mm focal length when used on an APS-C EOS body gives the same angle of view as a 38mm lens on a full-frame DSLR. That’s close to that of the human eye, so your pictures will have a natural look and feel about them.

Smooth, quiet focusing

Near-silent STM focusing locks on quickly when shooting still photos, and provides smooth focus transitions when capturing movies, for footage that’s free from distracting focusing noise.

Wide aperture for low-light shooting

A fast maximum aperture of f/2.8 lets in lots of light, letting you shoot in dark conditions without using flash. It’s ideal for creating shallow depth-of-field effects too, letting you isolate your subject against a soft, out-of-focus background.

Advanced optical design

Enjoy razor-sharp performance right across the frame, with high resistance to flare and coloured fringing. Get as near as 16cm to small subjects for a close-up view of the world.

Aspherical lens elements capable of converging light rays to a point

Traditional spherical lens elements are unable to ensure that light rays entering from the peripheral areas and those from the centre converge at the same point. Generally, it is difficult for spherical lens elements alone to correct spherical aberration on large-diameter lenses as well as distortion on wide-angle lenses. In contrast, aspherical lens elements have a lens surfacing with varying curvature, designed to make the light rays converge at the same. The manufacturing of aspherical lens elements requires a high level of processing technology and precise measuring techniques in order to produce a lens curvature for obtaining the ideal imaging point. Canon embarked on developing the technology for manufacturing aspherical lens elements at an early stage, and succeeded in 1971 in commercialising the world’s first lens with built-in ground and polished glass aspherical lens elements. Today, Canon has been able to contribute to enhancing the image quality of many EF lenses through the mass production of glass-mould and replica aspherical lens elements.

Inner Focusing, Rear Focusing

Silent and smooth AF

The STM (Stepping Motor) is an AF drive motor that is able to control the rotational operation of the motor using the fluctuation of pulse signals. Each electrical pulse signal can rotate the stepping motor by one step, and start-stop response is superb. The simple mechanical structure makes it easy to adopt a compact lens design. Also, the STM helps to reduce operating sound, and is thus ideal for video shooting. Canon developed two different types of STM according to the lens characteristics. The “STM + lead screw” unit adopts a lead-screw-type drive that is capable of generating a large torque, and enables silent and smooth AF drive on zoom lenses. The “STM + gear” unit allows for compact lens designs, and is optimised as a drive motor for compact lenses such as the pancake lens.

Full-time Manual Focusing

Enables MF immediately after AF

Many of Canon’s EF lenses are equipped with “full-time manual focusing”, which allows manual focus right after auto focus is complete, just by turning the focusing ring and without the need to switch to MF mode. All Ring USM and STM lenses support full-time manual focusing.

Expresses point light sources in beautiful round bokeh

The aperture is made up of several blades, the number of which determines the shape of the bokeh effect, such as in the case of illumination, light seeping through the leaves of a tree, and light reflection from the water surface. Light normally appears round when seen through our eyes, thus expressing light in a circular shape adds a more natural and soft touch to the resulting image. Almost all EF lenses employ a circular aperture diaphragm.
